The NUS Department of Ophthalmology engages actively in clinical
services, teaching and research. Our Academic staff members hold
joint clinical and research appointments at the Singapore Eye Research
Institute, the Singapore National Eye Centre, and The Eye Institute
of the National Healthcare Group, effectively providing ophthalmic
care to a wide section of the population in Singapore, and interacting
with vision researchers across the island.
Our undergraduate teaching programme focuses on a problem-oriented
and evidence-based approach to common ophthalmic presentations.
The curriculum emphasizes on clinical skills acquisition in the
field of ophthalmology, and incorporates tutorials and clinical
teaching at the National University Hospital, Singapore National
Eye Centre and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
The department is also fully committed to full graduate education
program, providing basic and advanced training for local and overseas
ophthalmic trainees.
With the robust growth of ophthalmic research in Singapore, our
department works closely with
Singapore
Eye Research Institute (SERI), an NUS-affiliated research institution,
to participate in clinical trials, epidemiological and basic laboratory
research in vision research. Through the research facilities of
SERI, the department has immediate access to dedicated clinical
trial clinics, an epidemiological field team, basic research laboratories
and core research technologies available include facilities for
animal and human tissue culture, gene arrays, proteomics and a jointly-developed
primate facility for dedicated primate research.
The Department is actively involved in numerous multi-centered
research trials at international levels with world-renowned institutions
and pharmaceutical institutions, with a goal of becoming a world
class ophthalmic research and training institution in the 21st century.
