2009 Admissions-Exceptional Individual Scheme (EIS)

Rationale

The Exceptional Individual Admissions Scheme was developed as a way of exercising discretionary criteria in admitting a small number of students to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Applications submitted through this route will be evaluated by the Selection Committee on the basis of exceptional talent and achievement in addition to academic excellence.

Application Process

You must first apply for admission to NUS and pay the application fee through the Office of Admissions. The application for admission is available at http://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/apply/.

You must indicate Medicine as one of your course choices. An Application Number will be given to you when you successfully submit an online application to the NUS Office of Admissions. In completing this form for submission to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, you will be asked for your Application Number.

If you have not applied for admission to NUS through the Office of Admissions, or if you have not indicated Medicine as one of your choices in your application, you cannot be considered for Medicine under the Exceptional Individual Scheme.

Deadlines

The EIS form must be submitted by 1 April 2009. The NUS application for admission must be submitted to the NUS Office of Admissions. In order for a student to be considered under the Exceptional Individual Scheme, this form with all required documents must be submitted to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine:

Dean's Office, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine
Attn: Exceptional Individual Scheme for Admission
    National University of Singapore
Level 2, Clinical Research Centre (MD11)
    10 Medical Drive
    Singapore 117597
    Telephone (65) 6516 3297
    Fax (65) 6778 5743
Selection Process

Students shortlisted by the Selection Committee will be invited to partake in interviews and tests along with students who were shortlisted via the traditional route. Shortlisted students will be notified in mid-April; interviews and tests take place in early May. A small number of outstanding students will be offered admission, for up to 10% of the 2009 intake. The decisions of the Selection Committee are final.

Application Form

To be considered under the Exceptional Individual scheme, complete the application form and attach the required supporting documents:

  1. A letter of nomination from one of the following:
    1. your Junior College or last school attended
    2. a registered charity (includes religious organizations)
    3. an agency such as the National Arts Council, the Singapore Sports Council, the Singapore National Olympic Council, the Singapore International Foundation, or the National Council of Social Services
  2. A second letter of recommendation from someone, not related to you, who knows you well
  3. A personal statement (one page). Please tell us about experiences that have shaped your desire to study medicine. Specific details will be more effective than vague generalities.
  4. A resume or list of your extracurricular accomplishments (one page). These may be those covered under the PEARLS scheme, but they may also lie outside the scope of the PEARLS evaluation, such as community service, activities related to religious or cultural organizations, arts, or employment.
  5. Copies of your educational certificates and SAT score reports, if applicable.
  6. Copies of relevant certificates or letters supporting your extracurricular achievements.
