24th South-east Asia Games, Thailand

Singapore’s water polo team (Lin Diyan, Lin Diyang and Tay Sin Chao Nigel) continued their winning streak by capturing the Gold medal for the 22nd time at this year’s South-east Asia Games, Thailand. The M1 students sealed the gold by winning their final match against Indonesia 13-6.

Mok Ying Ren (M1 student) received the Gold medal in the Triathlon category at this year’s South- east Asia Games, Thailand. Mok’s winning time was 2hrs, 5 mins and 8 secs. Read More.

NUS and KDF to find solution for kidney disease

Research into finding a long-term solution to kidney disease will be getting a boost from the KDF-NUS Kidney Research Fund. Dr Gordon Ku, Chairman, of the Kidney Dialysis Foundation (KDF) said that they have just received a firm commitment of $900,000 for the Fund, to be dispensed over three years.

Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research to set up its first Asian branch in Singapore

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been signed by the world’s largest international non-profit cancer research institute, the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (LICR), to establish a branch for translational and clinical cancer research in Singapore. This is in collaboration with three Singapore institutions, namely, the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of the National University of Singapore (NUS-YLLSoM) and the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School (Duke-NUS GMS)

New Clinical Imaging Research Centre

Biomedical researchers can now look forward to accessing state-of-the-art imaging tools with the establishment of the Clinical Imaging Research Centre (CIRC) in NUS. This is a joint collaboration between the University, A*STAR and Siemens Medical Solutions.

NUS sets up Professorship in Paediatric Orthopaedics

The National University of Singapore's School of Medicine has set up a new S$3 million Professorship in Paediatric Orthopaedics. It is in the name of the late Professor N Balachandran, an orthopaedic surgeon. His wife, Mrs Rita Balachandran, donated S$1.5 million which is matched dollar-for-dollar by the government. The professorship will be awarded annually to eminent international experts to further develop Singapore's capability in the field of paediatric orthopaedics. See Photo Gallery.

Double delight for graduating doctor twins

Twins Nicola and Emily Gan were among the 234 students who picked up bachelor degrees in medicine and surgery from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Read more.

Record $25m set aside for gastric cancer research

A team of 19 researchers from NUS, National Cancer Centre (NCC) and NUH has won a record $25 million in funding to help improve early detection of gastric cancer and possibly find a cure for it. Read more.

Results of the 5th Biomedical Research Council (BMRC) Grant Call

The results of the 5th Biomedical Research Council (BMRC) Grant Call was announced on 29 January 2007.

The results showed that NUS won the majority of grants awarded - 30 out of 51 grants went to our institution.

Assoc Prof Saw Seang Mei, Assistant Dean for Research, from the Department of Community, Occupational and Family Medicine, has the honour of winning the biggest single project funding granted in 2007: S$1.74 million over three years. She is Principal Investigator for the project on "Genes, gene-environment interactions and myopia in Singapore children," which aims to shed light on the onset of myopia.

The 5th BMRC grant call was highly competitive, with 168 research proposals submitted from May to June last year. Out of these, only 51 were selected and awarded a total of S$31.68 million.
