4th J&J-MOH-NUS Hospital Management Course
The fourth J&J-MOH-NUS Hospital Management Course was successfully conducted in Hanoi 26 July to 1 August 2009.  It was attended by 40 hospital directors and deputy directors nominated by Vietnam’s Ministry of Health.
 

The Minister of Health, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Trieu (centre) giving his speech at the closing ceremony. Noting with pleasure that “100% of course participants had rated the course as “excellent”, he thanked NUS for helping to raise the standard of hospital management in Vietnam.

A delegation of 15, comprising the Dean, Program Coordinator, lecturers and students, from the International Masters Program in Public Health, Gadjah Mada University, visited the department on 12 February 2009.
 
Staff Achievements
Congratulations to Dr Gerald Koh who was awarded the Schulich Graduate Scholarship from University of Western Ontario for his PhD studies from September 2009 to August 2010.
 
Congratulations to Dr Gerald Koh who was awarded the NMRC Research Training Fellowship (Overseas Research Attachment); for his PhD studies.
 
Dr Mikael Hartman was awarded the Breast Surgery International BSI Best Paper Prize for his paper on "Increasing proportion of synchronous bilateral breast cancer – measure of improving diagnostic work up", presented during International Surgical Week ISW 2009 held in Adelaide, Australia from 6 to 10 September 2009.
 
Congratulations to Dr Gerald Koh who had won the Poster Presentation Merit Award at the 4th Singapore Public Health and Occupational Conference on 28 Aug 2009, for the paper entitled "Predictors of Performance of Supervised Therapy in the Community in the First Post-Stroke Year: A Cohort Study with Repeated Measures".
 
Congratulations to Adjunct Professor Roy Chan who had received the Queen Elizabeth II Gold medal for services to public health and health promotion, from the Royal Society for Public Health on September 2009.
 

Congratulations to Mr Ong Her Yam and Mr Khoo Ngee Yau who were awarded the Long Service Medal on National Day Award 2009.

 
 
A/Prof saw Seang Mei will be receiving The Faculty Research Excellence Award AY2007/2008, in recognition of her continued excellence and leadership in research over the years of service in the Yong Loo Lon School of Medicine, on 11 July 2009
 
The department was the first laboratory based department in NUS to achieve OHSAS 18001 certification on 4 June 2009. This is an important achievement which demonstrates the department's commitment to health and safety in the workplace.
 
A/Prof Saw Seang Mei received the 2009 Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
 
Dr Gerald Koh was awarded the NMRC Research Training Fellowship (Overseas Research Attachment) for PhD studies wef September 2009 and he had also received the NUS University Annual Teaching Excellence Award for Academic Year 2007/2008 on 28 April 09.
 
Ong Yeong Bing and his team won the Bronze Award in the Safetymation video competition in April 2009, organized by OSHE, NUS; and in the "Safety starts with me" competition during the lauch of the National Workplace Safety and health on 28 April 2009, Suntec City Tropics Atrium, organized by Workplace Safetl and Health Council, Ministry of Manpower.
 
Blk MD3's fire safety committee attained a "Gold" standard for the fire safety inspection conducted by OSHE during NUS Annual Safety & Health Award Ceremony 2009.
 
A/Prof Koh Woon Puay and Dr Gerald Koh will be receiving The Faculty Teaching Excellence Award AY2007/2008, in recognition of their teaching in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, on 11 July 2009
 
A/Prof Wong Mee Lian has been conferred the Fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health, UK, through distinction on 4 February 2009; and was awarded the Distinguished Friend of National Skin Centre (NSC) Award 2009  on 2 May 2009, for her significant contribution in helping NSC achieve its strategic organizational mission and improvement in healthcare delivery  on prevention of sexually transmitted infections.
 
Dorothy Soh and Roma Soh won the Outstanding Suggestion of the Year Award for the period October 2007 to September 2008 for their VOICE suggestion. They were presented the award at the NUS Quality Service Day 2008/09 on 15 January 2009.
 
Appointments
Prof David Koh was appointed as Program Director for Preventive Medicine Residency Program, NUHS from 26 August 2009 to 31 March 2012.
 
A/Prof Wong Mee Lian was appointed as Associate Program Director for Preventive Medicine Residency Program, NUHS from 26 August 2009 to 31 March 2012.
 
A/Prof Saw Seang Mei was appointed as Vice Dean (Research, Preclinical), NUHS Research Office, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, wef 1 July 2009.
 
Prof Lee Hin Peng was re-appointed as a chairman of the NUS-IRB from 23 July 2009 to 22 July 2011.
 
Dr Gerald Koh was appointed as a member of the Medical Education Unit, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2012.
 
A/Prof Koh Woon Puay and A/Prof Jeannette Lee were appointed as member of the Phase III – V Curriculum Review Committee, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine wef 1 July 2009 for a period of 2 years.
 
Prof Chia Kee Seng, A/Prof Tai Bee Choo and Dr Luo Nan were appointed as Module Coordinator and member of the Academic Committee for the Master of Clinical Investigation Programme from 1 June 2009 to 31 May 2011.
 
Prof Ong Choon Nam was appointed as Director of the NUS Environmental research Institue (NERI) from 1 July to 30 June 2010.
 
A/Prof Saw Seang Mei was re-appointed as Assistant Dean (Graduate Studies) of the Research and Graduate Studies Team supporting the mandate of the Vice Dean (Research & Graduate Studies) from 01 July 2009 to 30 June 2010.
 
A/Prof Adeline Seow was invited to be an Advisor in the Master of Clinical Investigation Academic Committee from 1 June 2009 to 31 May 2011.
 
A/Prof Koh Woon Puay was appointed as Director of the Master of Clinicial Investigation Programme, and chairperson of the MCI Academic Committee from 1 June 2009 to 31 May 2011.
 
Prof Chia Kee Seng was re-appointed as Member of the Teaching Faculty for the NHG-NUS Clinician Leadership in Research Programme from 1 May 2009 to 31 March 2011.
 
Appointments - External
Prof Chia Kee Seng was invited to be a member of the BMRC Local Review Panel for A*STAR-NZ HRC Joint Grants 2009.
 
Prof Ong Choon Nam was appointed as a member of the Local Evaluation Panel (LEP) for the National Research Foundation (NRF) Research Fellowship on 24 August 2009.
 
A/Prof Wong Mee Lian has been appointed joint editor of Sexual Health, a peer reviewed and the official Journal of the International Union against Sexually Tranmitted Infections (IUSTI), Asia-pacific, and the Asia-Oceanian Federation for Sexology.
 
Prof Ong Choon Nam was re-appointed as a member of the NMRC Local Review Panel, wef 1 July 2009 for a period of 2 years.
 
A/Prof Saw Seang Mei and A/Prof Shen Han Ming were re-appointed as member of the NMRC Scientific Review Panel 1 wef 1 July 2009 for 3 years.
 
A/Prof Adeline Seow and A/Prof Tai Bee Choo were re-appointed as member of the NMRC Scientific Review Panel 2 wef 1 July 2009 for 2 and 3 years respectively.
 
A/Prof Shen Han Ming was appointed as a member of the Editorial Board of Autophagy, a Tier I journal; from July 2009 to 2012.
 

Professor David Koh served as external examiner to the Master of Medicine (Community Medicine) program at the School of Medial Sciences of the University Sains Malaysia from 18 to 21 May 2009.

 
Professor David Koh was appointed the Chairman of the Institutional Evaluation Committee for the Institute of Occupational Medicine and Industrial Hygiene, National Taiwan University, from 12-13 March 2009. The other committee members were from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Tokyo University, Seoul National University, and the National Health Research Institutes, Taiwan.
 
A/Prof Lim Meng Kin was appointed as External Advisor of the new Bachelor of Science in Public Health Programme by the School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, with effect from 1 January 2009.
 
Student Achievements
Congratulations to Ms Wong Kin Yoke Yoko who had won the Oral Presentation Merit Award, at the 4th Singapore Public Health and Occupational Conference on 28 Aug 2009, for the paper entitled "Effect of Smoking Cessation on Lung Cancer in the Singapore Chinese Health Study".
 
Dr Lim John Wah, graduate student of Master of Public Health, will receive the Richard Gillis Book Prize AY2008/09 on 03 August 2009.
 
Mr Alan Pui Wee Ming, graduate of Master of Public Health, will receive the Tyo Cho Yook Gold Medal during AY2008/2009 during commencement on 13 July 2009.
 
Staff Promotions
Dr Jeannette Lee was promoted to Associate Professor wef 1 January 2009.
